I got into fell running during lockdown as we live next to a hill. Converting from a prop forward in rugby to a fell runner, I have found that my knees and hips are holding out so far, with more stretching and less weight being key to longevity on the fells. When my 12 year old daughter began to beat me, I stepped up training but she soon sped off into the distance and now my two boys also beat me comfortably.
My kids enjoyed it and I got involved in race organising to give them some racing opportunities, along with their speedy friends from the Mini Dragons (junior) section of the Mynydd Du club. Having taken a little time away from racing to organise junior races, I’m now in the co-ordinator role for the South Wales Junior Series, which will mean I can enter some races and come somewhere down the field. We now have a great group of parents who have taken over race organising, and a couple of other clubs are also organising races in South Wales.
