All the South Wales Winter Hill Series (SWWHS) races are category AS or BS, apart from one race which is category AM (What do the race categories and acronyms mean?). This year, they range from a short dash up and down Fan Fawr (3.2km, 305m) to the longest in the Series, Cat's Back/Ras Crib y Garth at 11.7km, to Llyn y Fan which is the race with the most ascent (714m).

See below for information about age categories, scoring, kit requirements and who to contact about the South Wales Winter Hill Series, as well as about the Hugh Aggleton Memorial Award.

Age categories

The age categories are: u23, v40, v50, v60, v70, v75, v80. Your age as of 1 January 2025 will be used to determine the applicable age category for the Series.

Scoring

Scoring in each race is based on the percentage of the course you could have covered in the time it took the average person to finish. This is calculated as (A/R) * 100 where R is the runner’s time in seconds and A is the mean (average) time of all finishers

Your Series score is the sum of your best 5 scores in the Series.

Kit requirements

All WFRA races require you to bring full kit (see the full kit list here). Please refer to individual races for further information and note that at the race, the Race Organiser (RO) will make a decision as to what you need to take with you.

Eligibility

You do not have to be a member of the WFRA to take part in the South Wales Winter Hill Series.

However, becoming a member of the WFRA helps to support fell running in Wales and the Borders and fell races such as the ones in this Series. You can join us as a member here.

Hugh Aggleton Memorial Award

Hugh-Aggleton-Memorial-Award-back.jpg

Hugh Aggleton was a prolific fell runner in south Wales and ran with local fell running club Mynyddwyr De Cymru (MDC). He was Welsh Champion in 2015, South Wales Series Champion twice, and ever-present at the front of the South Wales Winter Hill Series. He won numerous races and set course records yet was described as modest and unassuming. Hugh sadly died in 2022 after being diagnosed with an incurable, aggressive brain tumour in 2019. John Aggleton, Hugh’s father and former President of MDC, has written about Hugh here.

The Hugh Aggleton Memorial Award was set up in 2023 and is presented at the end of the South Wales Winter Hill Series each year. It is intended to go to someone who has made a notable contribution to the South Wales Winter Hill Series through their support of others. The trophy was kindly created and donated by fell runner and Race Organiser Andy Creber.
